Eagle Flight 2017

To all Eagle Flight 2017 Scouts and Parents and to those considering registering;
For those new to the program this web site provides a great deal of information. The content is frequently updated but 2016 information works well for 2017.
All registrations and Merit Badge selections will occur through Tentaroo this year. We and the council HQ have to move towards more electronic means of managing our business. We know the process is different and sometimes may be broken. Using it will make it better over time and please accept my apologies for the inconvenience if one occurs.
Eagle Flight 2017 camp week is at Babcock-Hovey, July 2-8, 2017. We had a very successful camp week there this past summer. We are making plans for the week to be even more exciting with minor scheduling changes to take advantage of what Babcock-Hovey has to offer for recreation.
For those still learning about Eagle Flight please read the documents in the Information section.
We’ve kept the previous messages on this page showing how the program ran last few years. In short Eagle Flight is a multiple month program where we engage Scouts and Adult merit badge counselors to facilitate earning merit badges, especially Eagle Scout required merit badges, prior to camp week.
At camp the counselors wrap up the discussion, show, tell and other delivery requirements of the badge. At camp, we also educate the Scouts how to earn the Eagle Scout rank and the resources available to them. We keep the Scouts busy all day and evening and we have FUN.
Once a Scout registers a password is sent by email for the Merit Badge page on this site. The password opens the site to the worksheets for the badges offered by Eagle Flight. Last year’s merit badges are currently shown. Most but not all will be offered again. This year we MAY substitute more trade oriented merit badges like Plumbing for badges that are often available at regular camp.
Email is the preferred method of communication for all parties. Please be sure your email address is correct on the registration form. Please provide both Scout and Parent emails on the registration form to facilitate good communication to all parties.
I will post specific meeting information for registered and interested Scouts in December. Our first 90-day Merit Badge work meeting will be schedule in Rochester February 2017. A meeting in March 2017 will be held in Geneva. Dates and locations to follow. All meetings for Eagle Flight begin at 7:00 pm.
A general information meeting is scheduled for April 2017 but at that time completing the 90 – day merit badge requirements by camp week is unlikely. That is not a bad thing as Scouts can and often do follow-up with their Counselors during the summer by email or face to face to complete the badge by the Fall COA.
We have Scout / Parent / Counselor / Scoutmaster meetings May and June 2017 in Rochester in preparation for camp week. Merit Badge selections are due by the May meeting and the Merit Badge schedule is delivered at the June meeting.
Scouts are expected to be prepared when they come to camp but Scouts and Parents are NOT required to attend any meetings prior to camp. This is especially important for our out of council attendees. However; we expect a significant amount of interaction by email between the Merit Badge Counselor, Eagle Flight Scoutmaster and Scout before camp begins. This ensures the Scout is prepared for the Eagle Flight camp week. We also expect all the forms to be delivered to us by email if necessary at the appropriate times to coordinate scheduling etc.
When Scouts are properly prepared for camp week Parents can expect 8 or more badges to be completed. When they are not prepared, the Scouts will receive partials and can follow-up with their Merit Badge Cunselors at any time. Eagle Flight is always more than simply the camp week. It’s a process to facilitate Adult leadership with Scouts to help along their path to Eagle Scout.
Good luck and thanks for being part of Eagle Flight 2017.

Welcome to Eagle Flight 2016

To all Eagle Flight 2016 Scouts and Parents and to those considering registering;

For those new to the program this web site provides a great deal of information. The content is frequently updated but 2015 information works well for 2016.

The 2016 registration form is found in the lower right hand corner in the forms section. We expect to offer the same Merit Badges in 2016 as 2015 and the 2016 Merit Badge selection form will be available by April 2016.

Eagle Flight 2016 camp week is at Babcock-Hovey, July 3-9, 2016. We had a very successful camp week there this past summer. We are making plans for the week to be even more exciting with minor scheduling changes to take advantage of what Babcock-Hovey has to offer for recreation.

Our first Eagle Flight meeting to begin the 90 – day merit badge effort and answer general questions is January 19, 2016 at 7:00 pm at the Seneca Waterways BSA headquarters, 2320 Brighton Henrietta Townline Rd. Don’t panic if you can’t make that date. Scouts wanting to complete their 90-day merit badge requirements by camp week have until April 4, 2016 to begin.

We will meet in Geneva on February 23, 2016, 7:00 pm at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Snell Rd. to support our units in the East end of the council.

We have Scout / Parent / Counselor / Scoutmaster meetings every month through June in preparation for camp week.

To all Eagle Flight 2015 Scouts and Parents,

We had a great turn out for the April 7, 2015 meeting at the Robach Community Center. We discussed many things at that meeting.

The most important thing is to remember that this web site is your best resource. Most questions such as events dates, locations and times, all Merit Badge worksheets and all forms are found at this site.

Some of you have found issues with the Merit Badge worksheets on the site. This is a constant update process and updates were made tonight. That does not mean everything is perfect. We do not have any full time staff to ensure the best quality but its pretty darn good. Continue to let me know if there are any problems.

We’ve now entered a critical phase of the Eagle Flight process. Please select your Merit Badges and send me the forms scanned by email or by snail mail and as a last resort bring them to the next meeting, Tuesday May 5, 2015 at the Robach Community Center at 7:00 pm. Same place, same time, different date.

We need all your Merit Badge selections by the May 5, 2015 meeting. This is the last date for official delivery of the Merit Badge forms. After that meeting the staff builds the merit badge schedule for camp week. This is a critical difference between Eagle Flight and other summer camp programs. We try to accommodate the top 9 selections for Merit Badges and we build the schedule around the Scout selections. We do NOT build a schedule and then fill in Scouts and then close selections made by May 5. We have plenty of counselors available for the Eagle required Merit Badges. Therefore you MUST select your Eagle required merit badges within the Top 9 slots as we make these merit badges the highest priority.

After May 5, 2015 any merit badge selections for late registering Scouts are scheduled on what is available. If you know any Scouts still deciding whether or not to come to camp the answer is YES, there is space available and YES, get forms in by May 5, 2015. Even if they come later, we can accommodate all of their required Eagle merit badges and many of the elective merit badges.

Please select up to 14 Merit Badges. You may not get them all. Not all Merit Badges are created equal at Eagle Flight. Some only require 1 session to complete, some 2, a few have 3 sessions and one has 5 sessions. That means depending on what you select you may get all 14 or you may not.

Please fill in the diamonds on the Merit Badge form for all Merit Badges you have already earned. This is a common mistake. As we stated at the meeting, we HAVE to fill your merit badge session schedule with something and if we run out of options in your 14 we will fill it with other merit badges that have not already been completed.

Please note we’ve added the Insect Study Merit Badge to the option list.

Please note that the Welding Merit Badge requires an extra weekend activity (usually later in May or early June) at Arc and Flame with an additional cost of ~$25. At that location you will complete all the actual welding requirements. Counselor discussions are done at camp in 1 session. The Welding Merit Badge does have a limit due to the Arc and Flame facility. Sign up soon to reserve your slot.

From this point forward I know I cannot answer many emails as quickly as possible for general questions. If you do not get a quick response to your email that means the question is already answered on the FAQ page of the web site.

Good luck to all as we progress on completing the prerequisites for the Merit Badges. Remember the next meeting is FORM meeting and we need to collect all Merit Badge forms and want all the other forms as well. Copies of the Medical Form are preferred. Please keep the originals.

Last note: we do NOT process registration forms or payments at any of the Eagle Flight meetings. Please send all payments and registration materials to the Council office. We cannot take the responsibility for the final payments that are soon due at any of the meetings.

Yours in Scouting,

Yves Robinson
Eagle Flight 2015 Course Director

Prospective Eagle Flight 2015 Scouts,

Congratulations for finding the Eagle Flight web site. On this site you will find a history of letters to the Eagle Flight 2014 Scouts and Parents that checked their progress up through Eagle Flight camp week of 2014. Please read the letters below to get a good feel for what happens before Eagle Flight camp week and some valuable information.

Eagle Flight 2014 participation included 89 Scouts that attended camp with 55 Scout Adult volunteers that supported their effort. Over 700 Merit Badges were earned and with 700 partials delivered.

Most of the partials required Scouts to complete their 90-day requirements and report back to the counselor for completion or had requirements that needed home inspections and other activities that could not be done at camp. In many cases these partials were completed before the end of the summer and in time for the 2014 Fall Court of Awards.

The most attended Merit Badge sessions were Personal Management, Personal Fitness, Family Life, Communications, and Citizenship in the World, Nation and Community. Eagle Flight 2014 offered the Swimming and Life Saving merit badges for the first time and an additional 50 other merit badges (including very well liked Welding and Aviation merit badges). Eagle Flight offers at least one option for all the required Eagle Scout merit badges.

For Eagle Flight 2015 we are camping at Babcock-Hovey and will open enrollment to a total 108 Scouts. Each Scout will be assigned to one of six Troops. Each Troop is supervised by a Scoutmaster, Assistant Scoutmaster and two Junior Assistant Scoutmasters. Scouts will register for merit badges that are offered during 4 merit badges sessions each day for a total of 20 sessions. Each session is 1 ½ hours long. Some badges require more than one session to complete. In all, Scouts receive 30 hours of merit badge activities during the camp week and more time is available on an as needed basis.

Please notice that the merit badge section of this web site is protected. Once Eagle Flight administrators receive confirmation of your registration you will receive a personal email with the password. This email confirms that Eagle Flight 2015 staff received all the correct information to reach out to you directly.

An information meeting is scheduled for January 2015 and our first 90 – day merit badge counselor meeting in February 2015. The first mandatory general meeting is scheduled in April 2015 for all Scouts and Parents reviewing policies and procedures. The exact date and location for the January 2015 meeting will be announced by December 2015 on this web site and hopefully on the Council Calendar.

I am looking forward to meeting you and servicing your Eagle Scout requirements and look forward to another great Eagle Flight 2015 experience.

June Letter

Scouts,

We are now just a few weeks away from Eagle Flight Camp.

All of you should now have your Eagle Flight merit badge schedules because you picked them up at our June 12, 2014 meeting or received them by email.

Some Scouts have open sessions in their schedule. During those times these Scouts are required to be at the NEST. The NEST is located at the Dining Hall. Merit badges may be offered that are not scheduled at other times. Scouts can also bring any partially completed Merit Badge blue cards and get counseling to help them complete those badges. Please bring all worksheets and blue card partials to Eagle Flight Camp and let’s see if we can help you finish those at camp. The NEST is also where Scouts go that need more time completing their prerequisites.

All Parents and Scouts must arrive at camp between noon and 1 PM on July 6, 2014. Remember we are at Camp Cutler this year. We’ve asked families to space themselves upon arrival with last names starting with A arriving at noon and those later in the alphabet arriving no later than 12:45.

Scouts should come prepared wearing their swim trunks. The swim test are the first order of business for Scouts after registration. During the swim test Parents are asked to bring the Scout’s gear and medications to their assigned Troop areas. All medications are given to the Scoutmaster. Parents should discuss the medication information with the Scoutmaster to avoid any confusion.

Please use the Massawepie check list and please be sure to bring a mess kit. Scouts are required to be in Class A uniforms for Flags at Breakfast and Diner. 2 Class B shirts are provided and must be worn during the merit badge sessions and during evening Eagle Flight Camp programs. Scouts may wear sporting gear during troop program time and troop challenges.

Please arrive by 10:00 am on July 12, 2014 for the closing program.

There is no lunch served on July 6 or July 12, 2014. So please come to camp well fed, diner is at 5:00 pm.

We are looking forward to a great Eagle Flight 2014 camp week, July 6 through July 12, 2014.

Regards,

Yves Robinson
Eagle Flight 2014 Course Director

To all Eagle Flight 2014 Scouts and Staff. We are increasing the Scout participation to a total of 5 Troops, a first for Eagle Flight. This would not be possible without the tremendous support of our adult volunteers and the Scouts wanting to participate in this premier program.

Many of the Scouts are now selecting their Merit Badges. Please download the worksheets. At a minimum each Scout should contact each of the merit badge counselors using the email link. Each merit badge counselor appreciates helping their Scouts with the preparation to make the Eagle Flight camp experience as successful as possible.

Wow,

We had a great meeting tonight (April 3, 2014) for our 90 day merit badge counselors and we had many new Scouts and Parents show up for the General Session.

We’ve effectively closed registration today for Eagle Flight 2014. This is the first year we’ve closed registration prior to camp.

Some parents came to us tonight and have not yet formally registered. We expect them to deliver the registration form and deposit tomorrow at the Scout Shop. Scouts registering next week will be placed on a waiting list.

We have some comments and information based on questions that came to us tonight.

  1. All Scouts that want their 90 – day merit badges completed at Eagle Flight camp had to see their counselor tonight or must contact them before April 6, 2014. Those that need contact information please reply to this email and I will forward their email to you.
  2. Final Merit Badge selection forms and ALL OTHER FORMS must be given to us by the May 22, 2014 meeting. You can email us scanned and completed forms, see below.
  3. You must contact your Merit Badge Counselors for most Merit Badges between now and camp using the contact information on the forms from the web site where indicated. All contact can be done by email, including the 90 day badges.
  4. The May 22, 2014 is a mandatory meeting for all Scouts and Merit Badge Counselors. We know some can’t make it due to other commitments. Regardless this meeting is when the Scouts and Parents get access to all Merit Badge counselors for requirement assistance. All forms are due at this time.
  5. Meeting ahead of time with the Merit Badge Counselor is important. This is an example from the Sports Merit Badge Counselor. He expects to meet each Scout wanting that badge at either the May 22, 2014 meeting or the June 12, 2014 meeting. If they do not meet with him prior to camp he will not sign off on their badge. Again, they can contact him via email prior to camp instead of face to face.
  6. The June 12, 2014 meeting is another mandatory meeting where the Scouts receive their schedules. This is where the Scouts know what badges they are assigned for camp. The Merit Badge counselors will be there, again, to assist in requirement preparation for camp.
  7. The Scout Merit Badge selection form is available on the forms page at eagle-flight.org.
  8. Provided as an example as to the impact Eagle Flight has on our Scouts and their families, an Eagle Flight 2013 alum and their parent visited us from Eden NY tonight to assess whether he should register as a Scout and asked whether he could come as a JASM. Come to Eagle Flight 2014 camp to hear the end of that story.
  9. Consider signing up for Aviation. There are prerequisites but they’re exciting. You won’t find many programs offering that badge. And the counselor used to work at NASA during the Apollo and Skylab days.
